History

Based out of Louisville, Kentucky, the Louisville City FC is the professional soccer club playing within the USL Championship. Although the club was founded in 2014, they did not play their first season until 2015. The team started out originally as the Orlando City FC that was also based within the USL, however with Orlando City SC coming to the city from the MLS organization the team was required to relocate. The club formally made their move in 2014, maintaining the colors of the original Orlando franchise. In the first two years of the team, they made it to the Eastern Conference finals of the playoffs, and in 2017 as well as 2018 they went on to become the champions of the USL cup. After winning the title twice, Louisville City FC became the first club to win back to back cup championships.

Rivalries

The Louisville City FC has three main rivals that they duke it out with on the field on a regular basis. Both located along the Ohio River, the rivalry with FC Cincinnati is perhaps their most intense. Playing annually at the Dirty River Derby for the River Cities cup, they have generated a heated rivalry. The Saint Louis FC are another rival of Louisville City FC, as they played their first ever match against them. Since then they have developed a somewhat friendly rivalry playing every year for the Kings Cup. The final rival of Louisville is the Indy Eleven. Regionally based the two played against each other in the 2015 U.S. Open Cup, generating a rivalry based on Louisville’s victory. Home Field Advantage

Currently Louisville City FC plays their home games at Louisville Slugger Field, which is typically used as a baseball stadium. Along with being home to the soccer club, they also host the Triple-A affiliate of the MLB team the Cincinnati Reds- the Louisville Bats. Due to the limited visibility during soccer games, a sell out stadium is considered to be only 8,000 fans. The city of Louisville voted in 2017 to create a separate soccer stadium for the club, with ground breaking in 2018. Expected to open in 2020, the Butchertown Stadium will be the new home of the Louisville City FC.
