History
The Louisville Cardinals football program got their start in 1912 after years of the university only offering club level play. They were original members of the Southern Intercollegiate Athletic Association but early on the team faced financial struggles which led to them not playing for four seasons. In 1921 the Cardinals returned to collegiate level of play, mostly playing regional rivals due to major state schools leaving the league they were playing within. The first coach to really take on the rebuilding of the Louisville football team was Tom King, who was a former player for the Notre Dame Fighting Irish. As the Second World War approached, all of Cardinals athletic teams suffered losses of funding and players. After the war finished Frank Camp was announced as the new head coach for the team, and he revived the Cardinal football program once again. From 1946 to 1968 Camp brought victories back to Louisville, and when scholarship funding was cut, he did what no other coach in the league was willing to do. Camp was responsible for recruiting the first African-American players to the team, all of which went on to become starters for the team. From 1973 to 1984 Louisville’s football programed struggled to register a winning season, and during this time fan support of the game became an all time low. The Cardinals saving grace came in the presence of Howard Schnellenberger who coached the team from 1985 to 1994. During this extensive period with the Cardinals Schnellenberger revived the team from being almost extinct within the NCAA. Although he was never able to produce a national championship for the Cardinals, he is still to this day considered to be one of the best coaches that the Cardinals ever had. After his departure in 1994 the Cardinals saw very little success trickled in through their mostly defeat plagued seasons. In December of 2018 the Cardinals hired Scott Satterfield to lead the team on and off the field.
Playing out of Louisville, Kentucky, the Cardinals play all of their home games at Cardinal Stadium which seats over 60,000 fans! Rivals
The Cardinals have three major rivals that make for an interesting matchup anytime they meet up on the field. Their most dynamic rival is within the Kentucky Wildcats. The rivalry spans across all sports, but within football the two have been playing off and on since the early 1900s. The rivalry had a significant hiatus, only picking back up since 1994.
