Rise to Stardom

Ritter was always interested in music. Inspired by hearing Johnny Cash and Bob Dylan’s “Girl from the North Country” when he was a teenager, he tried to begin songwriting. He went to Oberlin College in Ohio to study neuroscience, but later self-created the major “American History Through Narrtive Folk Music” and began his studies in that realm. When he was 21, he recorded his firm self-titled album on campus. As he worked temporary jobs and performed at open mic nights, he attempted to sell copies of his album. It was not until Irish musician Glen Hansard and his band The Frames spotted him, that he went with them to Ireland and found that his album sold well there.

Ritter’s second album, Golden Age of Radio, was recorded a year and a half after his first self-titled one. His second was self-released and recorded in three different studios, including a friend’s basement as one. While he was promoting that album, he met a head of a label who offered to remaster and released his album after liking what he heard when he played. His song, “Me & Jiggs” was released as a single in Ireland. In Ireland, Ritter became a success as word spread of him opening for The Frames and headlining his own shows. His third album, Hello Starling, which was produced by Frames guitarist Dave Odlum, debuted at No. 2 in Ireland.

In 2006 and 2007 Ritter released two more albums, first The Animal Years and then The Historical Conquests of Josh Ritter, both of which received liking and Stephen King even named The Animal Years the best album of 2016 in his column in Entertainment Weekly.
