Gifted from the Start
Jorja Smith was born on June 11, 1997 in the West Midlands, United Kingdom. She began playing music at the age of eight after her former musician father had encouraged her to take up piano lessons. Quickly becoming advanced for her age, she landed herself a scholarship at the Aldridge School where she also began learning how to sing. When she was 15 years old she began uploading videos of herself singing to YouTube, and she would eventually get scouted by a manager. When she graduated from high school she moved to London to pursue her dream of being a musician. After living there for only a year she released her debut single “Blue Lights”, which had garnered over 400,000 plays on SoundCloud within the first month. Shortly after the success of her first single, she dropped her second one called “Where Did I Go?”, quickly gaining the attention of legendary rapper Drake, who claimed at the time that it was his favorite track. In November of 2016 she released her first extended play entitled Project 11, landing her a spot in the top 5 of the BBC Music’s Sound of 2017 list. Her professional relationship with Drake deepened when she not only was a special guest on his Boy Meets World Tour, but also when she was featured on two of his tracks on the mixtape More Life. In October of 2017 Smith became the opening act for Bruno Mar’s 24K Magic World Tour. 2018 proved to be an amazing year for Smith, as she released several singles, including one with Kendrick Lamar that was on the soundtrack for the hit movie Black Panther. In the latter half of 2018 Smith embarked on a solo tour to promote her newest studio album Lost & Found. As she rises within the public spotlight, Smith credits Lauryn Hill, Alicia Keys and the late Amy Winehouse for being her inspirations throughout the entire process.
