The Making of a Legend
John Stephens was born on December 28, 1978 in Springfield, Ohio. He started his career in music at the age of four, when he sang in a church choir. By the age of seven he had ventured off and began to learn to play the piano. John pursued his music as an extracurricular activity while studying English at the University of Pennsylvania. Upon graduating in 1999 he began touring around his base in Philadelphia, and eventually branching out to shows in New York, DC, and Boston. He got his first big break when he worked with Lauryn Hill, playing piano in one of her songs.
Before he became an international superstar, John Legend worked with a substantial number of other iconic artists, including Alicia Keys, Jay-Z, Janet Jackson, and Kanye West. It was when he was working with Kanye West that he decided to go by a stage name, John Legend. He got the name suggested to him by a friend when he was told "You sound like one of the legends."
A True Legend
Legend has received several nominations and awards from his work as a singer, songwriter as well as an actor. In September of 2018 he became the youngest person in history, as well as the first African American man to be given an EGOT. Those given this prestigious recognition have won at least one of every major award; an Emmy, Grammy, Oscar, and Tony.
