John Butler was busking in Australia when he decided to form a three-piece band with Gavin Shoesmith and Jason McGann. They released their debut album in 1998, though a big break came in 2000 at the East Coast Blues & Roots Music Festival. When a storm broke out, fans crowded into the John Butler Trio performance tent, swelling the audience from a few dozen to thousands. The following year their album, Three, started gaining them traction in Australia and brought them into the US market. They toured with the Dave Matthews Band and John Mayer and performed at Bonnaroo and South by Southwest. As they continued to release music, their popularity around the world grew, and soon the John Butler Trio was winning awards and playing at historic venues like the Red Rocks Amphitheatre.
