College basketball with a higher purpose
The first Jimmy V Classic tipped off in 1995, and since then it has raised several million dollars for cancer research. The doubleheader is named for Jim Valvano, a basketball coach at North Carolina State, an honoree of the ESPY Awards, and a tragic victim of glandular cancer. The inaugural games took place at the Meadowlands Arena in East Rutherford, New Jersey, with Temple beating out Kansas in overtime and UMass eking out a victory over Georgia Tech. Duke currently is the leader for overall wins but just narrowly. Over half a dozen schools follow just one win behind, including Duke's fellow 2016 co-champion, Purdue. In 2002 the series kicked off a women's Jimmy V Classic, with Connecticut leading the pack in overall wins.

The 2017 Jimmy V Classic at Madison Square Garden will feature the UConn Huskies versus the Syracuse Orange and the Villanova Wildcats versus the Gonzaga Bulldogs.
