Men’s National Team
The Men’s Jamaican National Soccer team got their start in 1893 as an unorganized, unaffiliated team. It was not until 1910 that the sport would be nationally recognized, and therefore creating the Jamaica Football Federation. Their first game was played against their fellow Caribbean country Haiti in 1925, and what turned into a three-game series was eventually won by Jamaica. Up until the country of Jamaica declared independence in 1962, the national soccer team would play friendly games against their Caribbean neighbors. This allowed for them to focus on the development and conditioning of their players and organization. In 1963 the team competed in their first ever CONCACAF Championship, which they finished in last place of their group. After years of trying to qualify for the World Cup, the Jamaican national soccer team took the stage in 1998. Although they didn’t win the World Cup that year, they finished 22nd out of 32 teams which was a feat of its own for the team. Today Jamaica remains one of the most competitive Caribbean teams in the league, winning a total of six Caribbean Cups and finishing as the runner ups in the 2015 and 2017 CONCACAF Gold Cups.
Women’s National Team
The Women’s Jamaican National Soccer team got their start in 1991 also against Haiti, a game that they lost 1-0. In their early years the team struggled to gain their footing in an already dominated league. It was not until 2002 that they would qualify for their first Women’s Gold Cup appearance, and they ultimately lost all their preliminary games eliminating them from contention. The team would once again qualify for the Gold Cup once again in 2006, and they ended up getting further this time finishing in fourth place. From 2011 to 2014 the Women’s National team was forced to take a hiatus due to the lack of funding for practices and tournaments. The team made a comeback for a brief period until 2017 when they went unranked by FIFA once again. In 2018, after nearly two years of not competing the team qualified and finished in third place at the Women’s Gold Cup. In 2019 the women’s team qualified to compete within the FIFA Women’s World Cup for the first time, and they also became the first women’s Caribbean team to qualify for the tournament.
