About Ibeyi

Consisting of 19-year-old twin sisters Lisa-Kainde and Naomi Diaz, musical duo Ibeyi formed in Paris, France, in 2006. The sisters were born in Cuba before moving to Europe as children. They were raised by their father, the renowned late Anga Diaz. It's not surprising then the twins developed a passion for music at a young age: Lisa has long played the piano, while Naomi is a talented percussionist, specializing in the Cajon and Balas. The duo's musical style can best be described as an amalgamation of Cuban folk and electro soul, with their lyrics in English and Yoruban.

Upbringing and motivation
The girls also cite contemporary artists such as Frank Ocean, King Krule and James Blake. The Yoruban elements of their music are derived from their father's culture: The Youruba people originated in West Africa, before being transported to Cuba in the 1700s during slavery. The twins' father passed away when they were in their early teens and their mother subsequently encouraged them to pursue their musical dreams. The girls formed Ibeyi and began making music together, performing at venues in and around Paris.

Gaining mainstream popularity
They amassed a small but loyal following, and cheap tickets to their shows became hot commodities among Paris' electronic music set. Much like other notable performers of the digital age, the duo got their big break after being noticed online. Music producer Richard Russell saw a video of their hit track "Mama Says" on YouTube and decided to sign them to his label, XL Recordings. The deal required Ibeyi to travel to London, and they soon got to work recording their debut album. The album, dubbed simply "Ibeyi," was released in the winter of 2015 by the XL Recordings label. The finished album preceded the success of several big single releases, including "Oya," "River" and "Mama Says." The duo produced a video for single "Mama Says," which earned them further recognition and critical acclaim. The musical act now boasted a burgeoning fan base across Western Europe, and they were soon asked to appear on the musical flagship show, "Later With Jools Holland" on British channel BBC 2. With a number of tours and more music in the mix, it's clear that Ibeyi are just at the start of what promises to be an exciting and lengthy career.
