His Infernal Majesty got its first start in 1991 in Helsinki, but before the band could really get its foot in the door bassist Mikko "Mige" Paananen had to leave to join the military. However, HIM was rebooted in 1995, and the following year they released their debut EP. Greatest Lovesongs Vol. 6666 came out in 1997, launching them onto the Finnish Album chart. Their sophomore album made them a gothic rock sensation all over Europe, and on their first tour in the United States every single HIM concert sold out. The band continued to release albums prolifically and tour relentlessly, sometimes putting great physical and emotional strain on the musicians. Still, their popularity ballooned, and soon they were touring in Australia and South America.
