A hard road to success
Born in Nashville, Gregg Allman had a difficult childhood. Still, after buying a guitar with his paperboy earnings, Gregg and his older brother Duane Allman bonded over music. The brothers started their first band when they were teenagers. The first successful band the Allman brothers had was the Allman Joys. Though the Allman Joys didn't last, it was on their tours that Gregg Allman developed his charismatic stage presence. Gregg and Duane found commercial success with their blues band the Allman Brother Band with their dynamic live shows. In 1971 they released their first live album, At Fillmore East. The album was a success, but tragically, Duane died in a motorcycle accident shortly after. The Allman Brothers Band kept going, gaining more and more popularity, until the group briefly fell apart in 1976. Gregg Allman continued to make music, even while struggling with drug addition, health problems, and the death of friends.
