A Rich History

Fort Worth has a long history when it comes to ranchers and their cattle. Situated in the middle of Texas, the city was the center hub for cowboys herding cattle up through the state and to Kansas. After the Pacific Railway set up shop throughout the state, the town began building stock yards to accommodate for all the cattle. In 1896 they held their first cattle show, which would later become the Fort Worth Stock Show and Rodeo. Originally all the participants in the showcase were all Texans. In the early 1900’s with some new funding they were able to build an indoor arena, as well as add a carnival to the festivities. After a suggestion came in from a local newspaper editor, the organizers of the event decided to add a rodeo onto the event as well. Opening in 1918 an indoor rodeo was added on to the schedule for the event. It became the world’s first indoor rodeo and consisted of twelve contestants vying for a cash prize. Primarily actors from western live action shows, they would compete on bronc riding, steering, bucking bronco as well as a wild horse race. They would also years later become the first rodeo to feature bull riding, perhaps one of the most dangerous, yet exciting events of the whole rodeo.

Today the Fort Worth Stock Show and Rodeo lasts a total of twenty-three days, beginning in January and going through early February. In addition to the live stock show and rodeo, those in attendance get a chance to listen to live entertainment, explore the carnival, and walk through hundreds of commercial exhibits. There are also several areas for the kids to go off and play within, so they don’t feel left out!

A Generous Giveback

Every year this event draws in close to a million people from all over the world. With this many people funneling into the city every year, it leaves a large positive economic impact on the local area. As an attempt to give back to the community that graciously hosts them, the Stock Show has been incorporated as a non-profit organization that funnels millions of dollars back into the local community as well as to educational efforts for the livestock industry. Students enrolled in agricultural, or veterinarian sciences at the Texas Christian University, Texas Tech University, or Texas A&M University have the chance to be awarded scholarships that are funded by the Stock Show.
