FKA Twigs, born Tahliah Debrett Barnett on January 16, 1988, is an English singer, songwriter, record producer, director, and dancer. Her debut album, LP1, was released in 2014 to critical acclaim. It peaked at number 16 on the UK Albums Chart and number 30 on the U.S. Billboard 200. It was also nominated for the Mercury Prize in 2014. She earned the nickname “Twigs” from the way her joints crack when she moves. She added the moniker “FKA” (which stands for "Formerly Known As", although in some interviews, Twigs has stated the “FKA” means nothing) after a duo called “The Twigs” complained about her use of the name. Early Life and Career
FKA Twigs was raised in Tewkesbury, Gloucestershire. Her father is Jamaican, and her mother is English and Spanish. She began making music at age 16 and moved to London at age 17 to become a dancer. She was a backup dancer in videos by artists including Kylie Minogue, Ed Sheeran, Plan B, Jessie J. and more. She has achieved phenomenal acclaim from both music critics and music lovers. Her two EPs, EP1 (also called “twigs”) and EP2 were released in 2010 and performed well on the charts, but her debut album, LP1, launched her onto the international trip-hop scene. Some of her most popular songs include "Water Me", "FKA x inc.", "Two Weeks", "Pendulum", "Hide", "Video Girl", and "Weak Spot". In 2014, she was nominated for BBC’s Sound of 2014 prize and was chosen as one of Spotify’s Spotlight on 2014 artists. Also in 2014, Billboard named her one of the “14 Artists to Watch in 2014”.
