Idolized Pioneers of Heavy Metal
Deep Purple got its start in 1968, quickly finding success in North America with their debut album and a tour supporting Cream. Soon, the British band was shaking up their lineup in search of a heavier sound. In 1969 Deep Purple finally started to gain attention in their home country when they released a live album in collaboration with the Royal Philharmonic Orchestra. In the 1970s Deep Purple, along with Led Zeppelin and Black Sabbath, began to define the sound of heavy metal. However, in the midst of worldwide success, the band started to fracture from internal pressures. Deep Purple broke up in 1976, remaining disbanded for eight years. But in 1984 metal fans rejoiced when Perfect Strangers was released, and Deep Purple took back the stage. In 2016 the band's legacy was recognized with an induction into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame.
Legacy
Documented as one of the early pioneers for hard rock and heavy metal, Deep Purple has inspired countless artists around the world. Some of the more notable performers who credit the band as inspiration include; Metallica, Judas Priest, Queen, Aerosmith, Alice in Chains, Iron Maiden, and Def Leppard. The band also ranked on VH1’s “100 Greatest Artists of Hard Rock” in the 22nd spot. Despite being eligible for nomination into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame since 1993, the band did not receive their first induction nominee until 2012. For the next four years the band would become nominated for induction several times, but they were never announced as the final inductees. The lack of representation for heavy metal in the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame upset many in the industry. Finally, in 2016 the band was announced on the list of the members to be inducted that year, alongside fellow heavy metal performers Led Zeppelin and Black Sabbath.
The Long Goodbye Tour
With The Long Goodbye Tour, Deep Purple hints that the end might be near. For the European leg of the tour that kicked off in 2017, Alice Cooper joined the band as they all toured for unforgettable performances. In May of 2019 the band announced that they would be adding more stops to their tour, this time in North America. What became known as the ninth leg of the tour kicked off in September at the Fox Performing Arts Center in Riverside, CA. The tour weaved its way throughout the United States with stops in Seattle, Atlanta, Nashville, Boston, Detroit, and Chicago.
