About David Gilmour
David Gilmour was born on March 6, 1946 in Cambridge, England. You might not recognize his name individually, but Gilmour earned his international fame via his guitar work and vocals for a little band called Pink Floyd. Gilmour has said his musical inspiration is largely from Bob Dylan. However, not for his lyrics, but instead for his guitar work. He started teaching himself how to play the guitar at a young age, before being enrolled in the Perse School - a school that wasn't significant to Gilmour other than it being the place that brought him and Pink Floyd guitarist Syd Barrett and bassist Roger Waters together. Barrett and Gilmour used to spend their lunch time practicing the guitar together. Pink Floyd was put together in 1965 by Barrett and Waters, and also Nick Mason and Richard Wright. Gilmour joined in December 1967, and stayed through the band's shake up of losing a couple of key performers.
Gilmour's career has stood the test of time, as he has been performing for over 50 years and selling more than 250 million records worldwide. In 2008, he was recognized for his superb music writing skills, and was awarded the Ivor Novello Lifetime Contribution Award. Gilmour was also honored by Rolling Stone magazine as the 14th greatest guitarist in 2011. Fans love it when they get David Gilmour tickets and hear some classic Pink Floyd songs.
