Franchise History

The Blue Jackets were founded in 2000 along with their rival, the Minnesota Wild , making them one of the youngest teams in the NHL. The Blue Jackets’ name and logos are inspired by Ohio’s Civil War History, and the team is based at Nationwide Arena in Columbus. The Blue Jackets struggled at first as they tried to make a name for themselves amongst the NHL greats. For the first several seasons the Columbus Blue Jackets finished at the bottom of the standings, despite having strong additions in the likes of Rick Nash and Marc Dennis. Throughout much of the early 2000’s the Blue Jackets began to lay the foundation for a strong team, building around left-winger Rick Nash. By 2009, the Blue Jackets proved their worthiness as a team to recon with by making it to the Stanley Cup Playoffs. They were ultimately swept in four games to the Detroit Red Wings and would not appear in the playoffs again until 2014. After several disappointing seasons between their playoff appearances, the Blue Jackets traded off several of their star players including Rick Nash to the New York Rangers. In return for their trades they received crucial draft picks, where they were able to get some young talent back to the team.

In the 2014 Stanley Cup Playoffs the Columbus Blue Jackets faced off against the Pittsburgh Penguins-forcing the dominant team to game seven before being eliminated. In 2016 the Blue Jackets hired legendary coach John Tortorella as their head coach, replacing Todd Richards. Under the leadership of Tortorella, the Blue Jackets organization began to flourish, qualifying for the playoffs regularly. In the 2019 Stanley Cup Playoffs the Blue Jackets won their first ever playoff series when they swept the highly favored Tampa Bay Lightning in the first round. However, in the second round they fell to the Boston Bruins in six games. With the young talent on the team beginning to develop, fans are eager to see what the Blue Jackets can accomplish this season.

Exceptional players such as Cam Atkinson and Pierre-Luc Dubois have helped build up the team and are a wonder to see on the ice. One of the fun things about a Columbus Blue Jackets game is their use of a Napoleon replica cannon, which is “fired” at crucial moments during the game or following a win. During their first season, the cannon was fired 164 times!

Columbus Blue Jackets vs Pittsburgh Penguins

The rivalry between the Blue Jackets and the Penguins is one of the youngest rivalries in the league, only starting in recent years. The real catalyst for this rivalry was when the Blue Jackets acquired Brandon Dubinsky from the New York Rangers, who is known for having it out for Penguins star player Sidney Crosby. With the addition of Scott Hartnell from the Philadelphia Flyers, the rivalry only intensified-becoming very physical. When the NHL realigned in the 2013-2014 season the two teams began playing within the same Metropolitan Conference-only adding to the rivalry. In total the two have faced off in the playoffs two times, with the Penguins coming out on top both times. Throughout the season the two regularly face off and being so close to each other geographically games draw in fans from both sides!
