Child Star Turned Pop Icon
Britney Jean Spears was born on December 2, 1981 in McComb, Mississippi to a strongly influenced religious family. When she was three her mother enrolled her in dance classes only to be selected early on to be the solo performer at the annual recital. At the age of five she made her singing debut at her kindergarten graduation. Growing up, Spears entered and won several children’s talent shows and competitions. When she was eight, her mother drove her to Atlanta, Georgia to audition for The Mickey Mouse Club. Although she was rejected because she was too young, the director gave her mother the number for a New York talent agent. After moving to New York and enrolling in the Professional Performing Arts School, she got her first lead role in the Off-Broadway musical Ruthless!. In 1992 she was finally accepted as a member of The Mickey Mouse Club cast alongside Christina Aguilera, Justin Timberlake, Ryan Gosling and Keri Russell. When the show ended in 1996 she returned home and back to the life of a normal teenager attending the local high school. In June of 1997 a family friend who was an entertainment lawyer decided that they wanted to pitch Britney to record labels. Two weeks after showing them her demo tape, Jive Records offered her a record deal. Working alongside producer Eric Foster White, Britney transformed her low sultry voice to the iconic sound that it is today.
On January 12, 1999 Spears released her first album Baby One More Time, with it debuting at number one on the U.S. Billboard 200. It was also later certified as a two-timed platinum album, selling over 10 million copies in the first year. Later that year she went on her first ever tour as the opening act for the boyband NSYNC. She became an immediate international success after her single "Oops! I Did It Again" broke record sales in 2000. Spears continued to release albums and music through the late 2000’s despite several personal struggles standing in the way.
Britney Spears has released nine albums in her career so far, and her strong influence on modern pop culture has earned her nicknames like the Princess of Pop and Queen of Pop, which she shares to some extent with the legendary Madonna.
Besides record-breaking CD sales, the Princess of Pop has been recognized in many other ways. She was among the best-selling teenage pop artists of all time, which helped her earn a Lifetime Achievement Award at the MTV Video Music Awards. She’s been awarded fifteen Billboard Music Awards, a Grammy Award and a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame. Billboard ranked her as one of the top artists of the 2000s and the top-selling female artist. Her continued success and work in the industry suggest many more awards in her future, and Britney Spears concert tickets often sell out thanks to legions of adoring fans who are quite certain of that.
