Setting
Betrayal is set in London and Venice, through the years of 1968 and 1977. This show first presents events in reverse order. As the show progresses, scenes are then shown in the present time. This story hones in on two characters, Jerry and Emma, who have rekindled their relationship after Emma’s previous marriage dissolves. Jerry and Emma’s relationship is tracked all the way back, to when they began an affair. Love, lust, and time all play a role in the dynamic relationship between Emma, Jerry, and Robert. Questions are raised, emotions outpoured, and truths unfold throughout this exciting storyline. Will the memories fade? Or will they become a new reality?
Success Across the Board
The success of this show caught the eyes of many theaters across the globe. This show has been adapted in countries such as Australia, China, Israel, Italy, Spain, Turkey, Buenos Aires, and the United States. In 1983, Betrayal was even turned into a film directed by David Jones and included Jeremy Irons, Ben Kingsley, and Patricia Hodge as the leads. Proving to be successful in various locations, New York was also not a city that disappointed. This play premiered on Broadway on January 5th, 1980. It ran for 170 performances at the Trafalgar Theatre. Then in 2000, a Broadway revival was produced at the American Airlines Theatre. In 2013, another revival starring Daniel Craig and Rachel Weisz set a record for highest weekly gross on December 19th, 2013.
