A True Cinderella Story

Based off the 2004 novel, Be More Chill had its musical premier in May of 2015 at the Two River Theater in Red Bank, New Jersey. After three years of performances with a stellar cast, the musical made its debut as an Off-Broadway production at the Irene Diamond Stage. With new cast members stepping into the popular roles, Be More Chill had landed a spot as a Broadway production. Previews for the musical began at the Lyceum Theatre in February of 2019 and opening day happened about a month later. Originally the off-Broadway musical had mixed reviews from audiences saying they were lacking a connection with the piece. After some changes the new run of the musical on Broadway has left many critics retracting their reviews. The angsty teen storyline filled with love and struggle allows for theater goers of all ages to relate to the characters.

The Desire to Fit In

Growing up as the social outcast of his high school, Jeremy Heere was desperate to fit in and gain the attention of his long-time crush Christine. Jeremy, knowing that Christine is such an avid theater fan signs himself up for the school play as an attempt to get to know her. Desperate to gain popularity, Jeremy barely hesitated when his long-time bully Rich told him he could become popular by swallowing a pill called SQUIP. Despite warnings from his best friend Michael, Jeremy took the pill and it instantly implanted a computer into his brain. SQUIP soon began controlling every action of Jeremy’s, causing him to isolate himself from his family and friends. With everyone in the school implanting these computers in their brains it soon became apparent that the software had malicious intent. Now it is up to Jeremy to decide if having his popularity is worth risking everything he has ever known. After it is all said and done Jeremy learns that the consequences of peer pressure greatly outweigh the instant gratifications.
