The Gasparilla Bowl Began as the St. Petersburg Bowl back in 2008. It was the third major college bowl event hosted in the Tampa Bay area. The first two bowl games hosted was the Cigar Bowl and the Outback Bowl which is still going on today. It wasn’t until 2017 that the Gasparilla Bowl got its name. As the event has been rebranded as the Bad Boy Mowers Gasparilla Bowl back in August of 2017. The game is played at the Tropicana Field in St.Petersburg, Florida. Which seats over 25,000 people.
This Year
The conferences tie-ins are the ACC, C-USA, American as well as Sun Belt and MAC. This year the Temple Owls will be facing off again the FIU Panthers in the Gasparilla Bowl. The game is taking place on December 21st.
Notable MVPs
In 2009, wide receiver Mohamed Sanu was awarded the bowl game’s Most Valuable Player Award (MVP). In 2011 he tied the Big East record of 13 receptions in a single game. Mohamed Sanu now plays football professionally in the NFL. He’s a wide receiver for the Atlanta Falcons. In the 2016 Super LI against the New England Patriots. He received for a total 25 yards in overtime. The Atlanta Falcons beat out the Patriots in overtime 34-28.
In 2012 Blake Bortles who played for University of Central Florida (UCF) at the time was awarded the bowl game’s Most Valuable Player Award (MVP). In 2014 Blake was drafted as the 3rd pick in the first round by the Jacksonville Jaguars. He has been the first string quarterback for the Jacksonville Jaguars since 2014. He has broken over 6 Jaguars quarterback records.
