A Humble Start
Anthony Smith was born on July 26, 1988 in Corpus Christi, Texas to a single mother. Growing up without a father figure, Smith had struggled to find his place in his community. As a senior in high school he dropped out and began working full-time as a concrete finisher to help support his family. In 2008 Smith began his professional fighting career, mainly doing localized fights throughout the midwestern United States. He would face off against several veterans of both the WEC and the UFC, pulling together a winning record of 13-7. In 2011 he signed on with the Mixed Martial Arts league Strikeforce. During his time in this league he put up a record of 2-2, winning against Ben Lagman and Lumumba Sayers. In 2013 Strikeforce ceased to exist, forcing Smith to move on to the UFC. His first fight in the UFC proved to be very difficult, as he was defeated via a kneebar in the first round by Antonio Braga Neto. Ultimately his defeat resulted in him being released from the UFC. After being released Smith went on to compete in a single fight for Bellator MMA, where he won against Brian Green in a unanimous decision. In February of 2016 he resigned with the UFC facing off with Leonardo Augusto Leleco. Since resigning, he has had his fair share of ups and downs.
