From Class Clown to Comedic Star
Born June 1, 1981 to a Jewish-American family, Amy Schumer grew up on the Upper East Side of Manhattan. As a young teenager Amy’s parents went through a divorce resulting in her moving with her mother to Long Island where she finished out the rest of her schooling. She graduated from high school in 1999 where she was voted as the “class clown” and “teacher’s worst nightmare”. After high school Amy moved to Baltimore where she studied theater at Towson University, graduating in 2003. Moving home after college, Amy began studying again at the William Esper Studio while working as a bartender and waitress.
Her stand-up career began in 2004, when she first performed at Gotham Comedy Club. From there, she honed her comedy skills on the NBC show Last Comic Standing and in various Comedy Central specials. Despite her early success with her stand-up act, it was her sketch comedy series, Inside Amy Schumer, that catapulted her to fame. Her series has been nominated for several Emmys, and it won Outstanding Variety Sketch Series in 2015.
The film "Trainwreck," which Schumer wrote and starred in, was another major success. It was released in 2015, and Schumer garnered rave reviews for her hilarious portrayal of a 30-something woman with commitment issues. She has also appeared in films such as "Sleepwalk with Me" and "Seeking a Friend for the End of the World."
Fans of Amy Schumer stand up and the Amy Schumer show will be pleased to hear that her comedy tour is just as brazen and boundary-pushing.
