Los Angeles Galaxy History
The Los Angeles Galaxy is one of the 10 teams that first made up the MLS. The LA Galaxy made a huge splash when they signed international British superstar midfielder and celebrity David Beckham who helped lead the club to the top of the Western Conference in 2009 and qualify for the MLS Cup that year, eventually falling in the final against Real Salt Lake. In 2013, Galaxy concluded the season finishing third in the Western Conference. They made it to the semi-finals, losing 2-1 to Real Salt Lake. In the 2014 MLS Cup they played the New England Revolution and won in overtime 2-1, making them five-time champions, a record for the league. When the team accumulated Liverpool player Steven Gerrard and Mexican star Giovani dos Santos as designated players in 2015, they made headlines.
In 2016 when Bruce Arena, long-time general manager and head coach left Galaxy he took most of the coaching staff with him. He was replaced by former Galaxy player Peter Vagenes as GM and Curt Onalfo took on the role of head coach. Not long into Onalfo’s coaching he was fired and replaced by former head coach Sigi Schmid in 2017. In 2018 another legendary player was recruited to the team. Zlatan Ibrahimovic scored two goals in his debut game with the Galaxy, with one of those goals becoming the MLS Goal of the Year! 2019 brought Guillermo Barros Schelotto to the team as a coach, as well as notable new players including Uruguayan Diego Polenta, Cristian Pavon, Favio Alvarez, and Uriel Antuna.
With the new stars on the team, Galaxy placedmi fifth in the West and made it to the playoffs. Ibrahimovic finished the season with 30 goals, being the second-highest in the season and the third-highest in league history. During the playoffs Galaxy beat Minnesota United 2-1, then lost to LAFC 5-3. Ibrahimovic left the club, and so did most of the other 2019 signings on loan, only Pavon returned for the following season.
