About Washington Commanders vs. Green Bay Packers
The Packers and Washington Commanders rivalry has often been described as a bit of a paradox. It is one of the oldest in the League. It began in 1932 when the team was established as the Boston Braves. While this rivalry spans over eight decades, the two teams have played only 33 games against each other - excluding the three post-season games.
It is true that Commanders, formerly Redskins, never faced the Packers during the Packers dynasty of the 1960s, nonetheless, the two teams share between them significant NFL history and one legendary coach, Vince Lombardi.
The 33 games that the two teams have played were enough to make some of the most memorable moments in NFL history.
Memorable Packers– Commanders Moments
The 48–47 Finish – On October 17, 1983, the highest-scoring game in Monday Night Football was played at Lambeau Field. This game featured 11 touchdowns, six field goals and 1,025 total offense yards. In the end, it was the Packers kicker Jan Stenerud who hit a 20-yard field goal with 54 seconds left on the clock to make the difference and win the game for his side by one point.
When the Packers crushed Commanders – The venue was once again Lambeau Field, the date was September 24, 2001, and it was 46-degrees in Green Bay. Brett Favre was magnificent that day, throwing three touchdowns and completing 20 of 31 passes for 236 yards. Not to be outdone, the Packers defense was equally impressive, allowing less than 300 yards to Commanders’ offense and creating four turnovers. The game ended with a 37-0 score, leaving Washington with one of their worst defeats ever.
