While this rivalry of over half a decade has not been particularly exciting, that is expected to change. Lately, things have heated up between the two teams. In the last two decades the teams have had shared some common players and coaches. This added some fire to the division competitors rivalry.
Highlights of the Rivalry
It made news when on Jan 29, 2002, Marty Schottenheimer joined the Chargers. He served as the head coach of the Kansas City Chiefs from 1989 to 1998, posting a 101–58–1 regular season record, three division titles and a trip to the 1993 AFC Championship game. Before Schottenheimer joined the Chiefs, the team had made it to only one playoff in 17 years and with him they made seven playoff appearances.
His move to the Chargers marked one of the biggest divisional jumps in NFL history. When he joined, Chargers had not had a winning record in seven years but with Schottenheimer that changed. The franchise won two AFC West titles in the next five years. He also led the team to two playoff appearances but both ended in losses.
During his time with the Chargers, Schottenheimer posted a 47-33 record in five seasons as their head coach. Also the Chargers went 5-5 against the Chiefs with Schottenheimer as their coach.
Overall, Schottenheimer won 200 games as an NFL head coach. He was the most successful coach but his career was tainted for not being able to make it to the Super Bowl.
AFC Championship, January 2, 1993.
January 2, 1993, has a historic significance as it is the date when the Chiefs and the Chargers met for the post season. The sixth-seeded Chiefs had high hopes and were looking to sweep over their division rivals. In the first quarter both the teams were unable to score. Chargers running back Marion Butts changed the game with a 54-yard touchdown. Then there was no stopping the Chargers who went on to score 17 points. The Chargers won the game 17-0 at the Jack Murphy Stadium. This marked their first playoff win since 1982.

Then who can forget Lance AlWorth, one of the best Chargers of all-time. He was the first AFL player inducted into the Hall of Fame and probably the best wide receiver of all-time.

The Chargers and Chiefs return to the Arrowhead Stadium and the Dignity Health Sports Park for an exciting showdown. The Kansas City Chiefs have won division titles in 2003, 2010 and 2016 and are looking good and the Chargers are looking to gain ground after returning to LA in 2017.
