About Denver Broncos vs. Las Vegas Raiders
The Denver Broncos and the Las Vegas Raiders ,formerly the Oakland Raiders, go back a long way. They were both members of the AFL in the 1960s and when the AFL-NFL merger took place, both teams made the move to the AFC West.
While they met each other for the first time on October 2, 1960, it was in the 1970s that the rivalry really took off. The fuse was lit when the Broncos and the Raiders joined the NFL and it has simply carried on from there.
The Broncos and the Raiders have clashed in some colossal encounters over the years and here we will look at two of those.
The first postseason meeting - The 1977 season marked the first time the Denver Broncos made it to the playoffs. They beat the Steelers in the divisional playoffs and then came up against the Raiders in the Conference Championship. The game was played on January 1, 1978, at the Mile High Stadium and the Broncos raced to a 7-3 lead in the first quarter.
Neither side scored in the second quarter but the Broncos then scored seven unanswered points in the third to go 14-3 up. The Raiders, who were the reigning Super Bowl champions, then mounted a spirited comeback by scoring fourteen points in the last quarter. The Broncos also scored six points to eventually win 20-17.
The second postseason meeting - The Broncos and the Raiders met in the playoffs once again in the 1993 season. This remains their last ever postseason clash till date. On January 2, 1994, in the last game of the season, the Raiders overcame a 30-13 deficit to beat the Broncos 33-30 and set up a meeting for the following week in the wild card game.
On January 9, 1994, the Broncos and the Raiders took to the field at the Los Angeles Memorial Coliseum. The Raiders took a 14-7 lead in the first quarter. The second quarter saw the Broncos in the ascendency by 14-7 to tie the game. The Raiders however flew out of the blocks in the third quarter to score fourteen unanswered points. The last quarter was 7-3 in favor of the Raiders who eventually won the encounter 42-24.

The Broncos Raiders Icons
John Elway is arguably the greatest Denver Broncos player in history. He was instrumental in the franchise’s early successes and is now regarded as one of the greatest QBs in history. Elway however did not do it all on his own. He had players like Terrell Davis playing with him who is a two time Super Bowl winner with the Broncos and also became a Super Bowl MVP in the process. With Terrell Davis winning two Super Bowls, Peyton Manning carried the mantle by leading the Broncos to their third title in Super Bowl 50.
At the Las Vegas Raiders’ side of things, you simply cannot look past greats like Marcus Allen who won Super Bowl XVIII with the Raiders and was also the MVP. Gene Upshaw is another Raiders icon who won two Super Bowls with the franchise and was a six time Pro Bowl pick. Three Super Bowl wins, eight Pro Bowl picks and 2 AP First Team All-Pro selections are the highlights of Art Shell’s tenure with the Raiders. Shell was one of the reasons the Raiders were considered one of the best sides of the 1980s.
