Name Changes

The New Orleans Pelicans and Charlotte Hornets have both called themselves Hornets over the years since being established in the NBA, but Charlotte officially claimed the name in 2014. Even though Charlotte’s team started out as the Hornets, the team spend 10 seasons as Bobcats while New Orleans called their NBA team the Hornets. In 2013, the Louisiana team changed their name to the Pelicans so Charlotte could take back their old name.
