About Calgary Flames vs. Edmonton Oilers
The Battle of Alberta
The Calgary Flames and Edmonton Oilers have been locked in a rivalry for provincial bragging rights. The two teams have been facing off since 1980 when the Oiler joined the NHL. The rivalry was at its height when the two teams were the most dominant in the Campbell Conference, and quite possibly the best in the entire league. Each team would find its way to the Stanley Cup for eight consecutive years from 1983 to 1990. The two teams would face each other numerous times in the playoffs. The Oilers would defeat the Flames in the playoffs in 1983, 84, 86, and 91 on the way to winning their five Stanley Cups. A feat that has not been repeated since. The two teams did not meet again until 2022. Alberta got the nickname as the "Death Valley of Hockey" due to the fierce competitiveness opposing teams would face on a road trip to the Canadian province. It's been well over a decade for either team to return to the form they exhibited in the 1980's. While the Flames did advance to the Stanley Cup Finals in 2004, they failed to win it, losing in seven games to the Tampa Bay Lightning 2006 saw the Oilers lose to the Carolina Hurricanes The rivarly would back a brief hiatus until 2020 when tempers boiled over and Calgary's Matthwe Tkachuk and Edmonton's Zack Kassian began fighting on the ice. The two teams would get into an all-out brawl on the ice. During the 2022 playoffs the Oiler and Flames faced off in the second round. The Oilers would win the series but eventually lose to the Colorado Avalanche in the Western Conference Finals.
