About Cher

Cher was born as Cherilyn Sarkisian on May 20, 1946 in El Centro, California. As a child Cher was bounced around, living an unstable childhood due to her mothers’ career as a struggling actress. From a young age she decided that she wanted to become famous, setting her sites on Hollywood. With her unusually low voice and out of the box personality, Cher began performing in school plays. When she was sixteen she dropped out of high school and moved to Los Angeles where she was determined to become a celebrity. It was during her time out in Los Angeles that she met fellow performer Sonny Bono, who she would form a duo with known as Sonny & Cher. The two released “I Got You Babe” in 1965, becoming international sensations. In 1975 the duo broke up, sending Cher into a musical hiatus that lasted four years. In 1979 Cher relaunched herself as a solo artist, working to turn herself into one of the best-selling artists of all time. Today Cher is credited as a break through artist during a time where the industry was dominated by men. In her nearly six-decade long career, Cher has brought home several awards and accolades including a Grammy Award, three Golden Globe Awards, and an Academy Award.
