Flights to Iceland are generally split between two main airports, with Reykjavik Airport (REK) handling most domestic flights and Keflavik International Airport (KEF) handling all international flights from cities throughout Europe, Canada, and the United States. A bus transfer is available to take passengers between the two to make their connecting Iceland flights. Reykjavik Airport is the main hub for the domestic carriers Eagle Air and Air Iceland and flights to the Faroe Islands. Keflavik International Airport is the hub for Icelandair and Iceland Express and has banking services, travel agencies, and a tourism information center. Iceland also has a handful of smaller airports located around the country, including on the eastern and southern coasts.

Iceland Weather

The most popular time to visit Iceland is during the summer months of June through August, when temperatures are relatively warmer and the midnight sun hovers in the sky late into the night. Iceland's rainy season runs from October to February, but the weather can change rapidly no matter the time of the year. Visitors can usually find cheap Iceland flights and hotel deals outside the peak summer months. However, some tour excursions stop operating in the fall as hinterland routes close down due to snow. Winter can be a magical time to book your flights to Iceland, because although sunlight hours are short, Christmas is a festive holiday and the Northern Lights are seen illuminating the sky. Winter adventure sports also make the budget-friendly off-season months a great time to visit.

Getting Around Iceland

The Flybus airport shuttle travels between the Reykjavik Airport, Keflavik International Airport, and hotels in Reykjavik. Metered taxis are also available at airports. Iceland has several domestic and charter flights for low-cost air travel between its cities. Renting a car provides flexibility, but driving in Iceland can involve navigating river crossings and unpaved terrain. Car rentals are also on the expensive side, from around ISK4000 for a vehicle with two-wheel drive. There are several bus tour companies available, such as the Bustravel Iceland, Netbus, and Reykjavik Excursions.

Iceland Attractions

Iceland is a beautiful country with great opportunities for outdoor adventure, including horseback riding or snowmobiling in winter. You can experience the lively nightlife and cultural attractions in Reykjavik, or explore the eco diversity and stunning landscapes in more remote locations. Other popular activities while visiting the country include:

  • Vatnajokull National Park, one of Europe's largest national parks and home to the Dettifoss waterfall and the enormous Vatna Glacier.
  • Blue Lagoon, a popular geothermal lagoon with hot waters and purportedly therapeutic properties.
  • Thingvellir National Park, a UNESCO World Heritage site with historical significance and where the North American and European tectonic plates are seen moving apart.
  • Gulfoss, an immense and powerful waterfall in the glacial river Hvita with a 105-foot double-cascade.
  • Geothermal Field, an area containing two huge geysers, Strokkur and Geysir, with Strokkur erupting every 5-10 minutes.
