Shaking up the alternative rock scene
Begun in 1981 as a reinvention of former band Loud Fast Rules, Soul Asylum made a name for themselves in the local Minneapolis scene for their intense live shows. The band released their debut album in 1984 and continued to record prolifically from that point on. Their charisma at live shows was undeniable, something totally different than what the rest of the alternative rock bands were doing at the time. Soul Asylum's unrestrained sound and nonchalant confidence led to them being dubbed a 'grunge precursor.' They began to really gain commercial success in the 1990s, when they played at President Bill Clinton's inauguration in 1993 and won a Grammy in 1994 for their single "Runaway Train." Tragically, bass guitarist Karl Mueller developed cancer and passed away in 2005.
