History of the San Jose Sharks
The San Jose Sharks were founded in 1991, and they were the first National Hockey League team that was in the area since the California Golden Seals were located there back in the 1970’s. Their first two seasons in the league proved to be a struggle for the Sharks, as is the case for most expansion teams. They simply did not have the immense talent that some of the other teams in the league had, that is until they acquired Doug Wilson. In their second year of playing within the league they had only won a mere eleven games. During the 1993-1994 season under a new coach, the Sharks managed to make the playoffs surpassing many of the expectations that were set at the beginning of the season. During their first playoff appearance they shockingly knocked out the favorite to win the cup, the Detroit Red Wings. They were however eliminated in the second round by the Toronto Maple Leafs. In franchise history the Sharks have made over twenty playoff appearances, walking away with one Conference Championship, one Presidents’ Trophy and six Division Championships. In the 2016 playoff run they made it as far as the finals, only to lose out to the Pittsburgh Penguins. In 2019 the Sharks made it to the Western Conference Finals, where they were defeated by the St. Louis Blues in six games.
The San Jose Sharks Arena
For the 1991-1992 season the Sharks played all their home games at the Cow Palace located in Daly City, California. In 1993 the team moved to the SAP Center located directly in San Jose, effectively creating the nickname for the arena “The Shark Tank”. The arena is known mainly for housing both the Sharks and their American Hockey League Affiliate the San Jose Barracuda. The SAP Center also hosts other events such as concerts and shows.
San Jose Sharks vs Anaheim Ducks
One of the Sharks main rivals are the Anaheim Ducks. The rivalry with the Ducks has been there since the team was formed, however it became more serious when the two started facing each other in the playoffs. The series between the two became known as the “Freeway Face-off” due to the only thing separating the two being the Interstate 5, that runs throughout the state. Although the two have only met in the post season once, seeing any regular season game between the two is an experience that you will remember forever!
San Jose Sharks vs Los Angeles Kings
The other main rivalry that the Sharks have lies within the Los Angeles Kings. The rivalry with the Kings goes a bit further back to the Sharks’ predecessor, the California Golden Seals. Being the only two teams in the NHL west of the Mississippi, they were natural enemies as they played each other often. When the Sharks replaced the Golden Seals in 1991, the rivalry between the Sharks and Kings began. Facing each other several times in the off season has made the rivalry become even stronger. Watching a game between the Sharks and the Kings would be one you won’t forget!
As one of the most dynamic teams in the Western Conference, the San Jose Sharks are one of the most exciting teams to watch live! Be one of the thousands of fans that flock to the shark tank every season, order your cheap San Jose Sharks tickets now!
