A Bruins game is always an exciting and wildly entertaining time for everyone involved!
Oldest American Team
The Bruins were founded in 1924 as one of the Original Six franchises, making them the oldest professional hockey team in the United States. They got their name from an old English word for “bear”, as the Bruins’ owner wanted to pick a mascot that would epitomize the wild nature of hockey. Relatively early on in their playing careers, the Bruins qualified for their first Stanley Cup Playoff appearance. They ended up making it all the way to the final round, only to be eliminated by the Ottawa Senators. The following season the Bruins made their second appearance in the playoffs where they defeated the New York Rangers in the finals, bringing home their first Stanley Cup. The following year the Bruins made their third appearance in the finals in three years, although they ultimately lost to the Montreal Canadiens. In 1939 the Bruins won their second Stanley Cup title against the Toronto Maple Leafs, and they won their third Cup in 1941 against the Detroit Red Wings. For the next 29 years the Bruins would not bring home another Stanley Cup due to the team’s lack luster performance after losing star players to the second World War.
Original Six Era
In the 1960’s the Boston Bruins began to rebuild after they were acquired under new ownership. In 1966 the Bruins signed defenseman Bobby Orr, who instantly made his impact on the ice for the team. By 1970 the team had made their first appearance in the Stanley Cup Finals in a very long time, and with a victory over the St. Louis Blues they ended their 29-year Cup drought. It was during this game that the famous image of Bobby Orr “soaring” through the air was taken after he scored the game-winning goal in overtime, winning the Bruins the Cup. The following season the Bruins would win yet again another Cup against the New York Rangers, and following that season the Bruins experienced another Cup drought that lasted well over 30 years.
Revitalization
For the next several years despite having several star players in the likes of Ray Bourque, Zdeno Chara, Patrice Bergeron, and Tuukka Rask the Bruins would not win their sixth Stanley Cup until 2011. Their 2011 appearance in the Stanley Cup Finals were the team’s first since the 1990 post season. In a highly contested series, the Bruins defeated the Vancouver Canucks in seven games. In the seasons following their victory the Bruins qualified for all but two post seasons. In 2019 the Bruins made it to the Stanley Cup Finals against the St. Louis Blues, a rematch of the 1970 Stanley Cup Finals. In a major upset of seven games, the Blues defeated the Bruins. The Bruins have won six Stanley Cups to date, with the most recent being in 2011.
