An All-Star Tradition

Since 1951 the NBA All-Star game has been the best way to see all of the NBAs current greats duking it out for an exhibition game that is never lacking in high-flying dunks and incredible theatrics. The game traditionally featured a head-to-head matchup of the Eastern Conference stars versus the Western Conference stars until the format was changed in 2018 in order to draw more excitement to the floor. Now, the rosters are selected by Team Captains and feature a live draft where the two captains select their team based on a pool of All-Star players.

Held over the course of All-Star Weekend, a three day event that generally takes place in the early spring before the final stretch of the regular season, the NBA All-Star game starting lineup is selected by a combination of fan, player, and media voting, while the remainder of the lineup is filled out by vote according to the coaches of each conference. The teams are coached by each conference's coach whose team holds the best regular season record.

2020 All-Star Game

This year’s Team Captains come with no surprise, as Team Lebron will face off against Team Antetokounmpo for the 3^rd straight season, but the rest of the starters bring some new excitement. While Lebron heads in for his 16^th selection, young stars like Trae Young, Pascal Siakam, and Luka Doncic get the nod to play in their first ever all-star appearance. Doncic, however, gets his selection as a rookie in what has been a phenomenal season for the Mavericks guard. Other stars like James Harden, Kemba Walker, Joel Embiid and Anthony Davis will headline the starting lineups. Team Lebron is 2-0 against Team Antetokounmpo, so this years All-Star game should be packed with excitement as Giannis will look to guide his team and dethrone King James.

The theatricality that accompanies the All-Star game is immense, as is the sense of fun among the players as the usually brutal competitive spirit is replaced by a more light-hearted desire to put on a show.

And put on a show they do, providing crowds with traditionally unseen player pairings for bombastic results.

Huge musical acts are also known to perform at halftime, including past performances by Michael Jackson, Justin Bieber and Elton John, among many others.
