Meshuggah, which is Hebrew for 'crazy,' first got started in 1987. Two years later they released their debut album, the 12" vinyl sold only locally. After signing with a label, Meshuggah released their first full length album in 1991, to small but positive critical acclaim. However their sophomore album, Destroy Erase Improve, hit a much wider audience, and soon Meshuggah was playing in the States at Ozzfest and with bands like Slayer and Tool. Part of Meshuggah's success stems from their willingness to experiment and innovate – and their talent in roaming through genres while maintaining their stylistic integrity. Famous for guitar riffs, complex rhythms, technical precision, and experimental jazz elements, Meshuggah is a marvel to see live. Rolling Stone has named Meshuggah a top ten heavy metal band, and Alternative Press has proclaimed them the most important metal band of all time.
