History

Originally created as a farewell tour for his band Jane's Addiction, founder Perry Farrell used inspiration from European-style music festivals that lasted for days at a time. In 1991, the event became one of the first-ever traveling and touring festivals in the United States. Exploding with a mix of music genres, numerous stages and a carnival-like environment, Lollapalooza was something new, and alternative rock was its catalyst. However, by 1997 the festival was losing steam and Farrell chose to focus on other projects. Protests of fans that saw Nirvana’s appearance in the festival as non-peaceful and against Lollapalooza's vision caused Farrell to throw in the towel indefinitely. The 1998 tour was canceled. A 2003 revival came up short and led to another cancellation in 2004. But by 2005, Farrell had partnered with Capital Sports & Entertainment - now C3 Presents - to reproduce Lollapalooza as a two-day destination festival in Grant Park, Chicago, Illinois. It was a success and it's remained there ever since, bringing together people, music and entertainment each summer.

New Format

After ditching the original format of a traveling music festival, Farrell decided to keep Lollapalooza in one place. The expansive venue of Grant Park in Chicago was chosen in 2005 and has remained as the festival's location ever since. In addition to the Chicago venue, Lollapalooza also hosts annual festivals in Chile, Germany, Argentina and Colombia. Lollapalooza takes place for three days each summer in the July heat.

History of Legendary Performers

As one of the very first U.S. music festivals to encompass a mix of genres, Lollapalooza has seen it all. Originally known for its alternative rock performers, the festival now brings in more than 170 bands and musicians from all over the world. Some of the most notable headliners in the early days of Lollapalooza included, Pearl Jam and Nirvana. Matchbox 20 and Third Eye Blind began to take the festival's center stages just as the late 1990s decline began. Other early notable performers included Nine Inch Nails, Smashing Pumpkins, Arcade Fire, the National, Wilco, Snoop Dogg and G. Love.

Summertime in Chicago means heat and humidity but there's also the chance of rain. Be sure to bring a hat and sunscreen. A fanny pack is a good idea. It's a great way to make sure your cellphone, wallet, and other valuables are kept in a secure location. Just make sure it's clear as that is one of the rules about bringing a bag in with you.
