Kristine Flaherty grew up outside of Chicago, early inspiration spreading in her life as a result of her music-loving father. She started studying at Stanford, surrounded by a variety of exciting new musical influences – but the one that fell flat for her was popular hip hop. Unimpressed by the radio hits, she wrote "Blingity Blang Blang," a parody song. It sparked a love of writing music, and she was soon recording her songs herself and hustling on the local circuit. She released her first mixtape in 2005, but it wasn't until five years later that she started prolifically recording. She had a professional fling with RCA Records that ended badly, sending her back to her independent ways. She crowd-sourced the funds Life as a Dog, which gave her career the boost it needed. The album climbed charts, and K. Flay was invited to tour with AWOLNATION, Third Eye Blind, and Dashboard Confessional.
