About Elton John
Early Life and Career
Born Reginald Kenneth Dwight, the singer known as Elton John began playing the piano at the tender age of 4. Seven years later, at age 11, he won a scholarship to the Royal Academy of Music.
Flash forward a few years: Every year between the years of 1970 and 1996, Elton John managed to create and release a top 40 hit. During the seventies alone, Elton John and lyricist Bernie Taupin worked together to create 25 top 40 hits. Of those creations, 16 landed on the top ten list and six of them went all the way to the top. In 1994, Elton John was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame. Elton John's album collection today consists of 33 studio albums in addition to the 16 compilations, soundtracks, and live albums. His discography also includes over 125 singles.
In 1998, Queen Elizabeth dubbed Elton John a knight, which gave him the title Sir Elton. He received this award for his contributions to music and charity. During 1988, Elton John tickets were nearly impossible to obtain; in fact, he performed five completely sold out shows at Madison Square Garden in New York City. His final show at The Garden that year broke the record for the most sold-out shows in that location.
When Princess Diana left this world, Elton John and Bernie Taupin reworked a song that was written for Marilyn Monroe in 1973, called "Candle in the Wind." This tribute rocked the world and became the highest certified single of all time; in fact, sales during the first month from the United States alone were over $11 million. This single did so well that it outsold his entire collection of gold and platinum hit singles combined.
