Red Wings games are some of the best in the NHL: passionate, electrifying, and filled with non-stop action!
Original Six Era
The Red Wings are one of the Original Six teams of the NHL, alongside the Montreal Canadiens, Boston Bruins, Chicago Blackhawks, Toronto Maple Leafs, and New York Rangers. They were originally founded in 1926 and were originally known as the Detroit Cougars, and briefly as the Detroit Falcons. While they were known as the Cougars, they qualified for the 1929 Stanley Cup Playoffs, but were eliminated after just two games by the Maple Leafs. Despite finishing at the bottom of the standings in 1932 the then Falcons once again qualified for the playoffs but did not advance far. At the end of the 1932 season, the name was officially changed to The Red Wings, with the logo paying homage to Detroit’s rich history in the automobile industry.
After a few turbulent years in the league, the Red Wings made it to their very first Stanley Cup Final in 1934, playing against the Chicago Blackhawks. Ultimately, they lost to Chicago, who was also competing for their first Cup title. In 1936 the Red Wings made it back to the finals, winning their first title against the Maple Leafs, and their second title in 1937 against the Rangers. The 1940’s proved to be the launching point for the Red Wings as they qualified for the playoffs in just about every season of the decade. By the end of the 1955 season the Red Wings had brought home to Detroit seven Stanley Cups. Leading them through much of the 1950’s and 1960’s was right winger Gordie Howe, whose exceptional play had brought many Cups to the team. Despite the success that much of the early 50s saw for the Red Wings, they failed to qualify for the playoffs for the first time in 21 years in 1959. With the brief bump in the road behind them, the Red Wings were back in the playoffs by 1961.
Dead Wings Era and Revitalization
After being eliminated from the Stanley Cup Finals in 1966, the Red Wings began a period that to many was known as the “Dead Wings” era. For the next 20 years the Red Wings failed to qualify for the playoffs. In 1993 the Red Wings hired Scotty Bowman as the new head coach, and under his leadership the team was back in the Stanley Cup Finals for the first time in 29 years. Ultimately the team was swept by the New Jersey Devils, but for many this sparked a flame that was thought to have been long gone within the team. In the 1996-1997 season the Red Wings broke their 42-year long drought, bringing home their eighth Stanley Cup. The following season the defending champs went up against the Washington Capitals, sweeping them in four games. In the 2001-2002 season under the leadership of newly acquired prospect Pavel Datsyuk, the Red Wings won another Stanley Cup against the Carolina Hurricanes. With their most recent Stanley Cup Victory against the Pittsburgh Penguins well over ten years old, many fans are eager to see what the young and reenergized team will bring to the ice this season!
The Detroit Red Wings are members of the Atlantic Division in the Eastern Conference of the NHL. As of 2019, the Red Wings have won the most Stanley Cup championships of any NHL franchise based in the United States and are the third overall in total Stanley Cup championships, behind the Montreal Canadiens and the Toronto Maple Leafs.
Detroit Red Wings vs Toronto Maple Leafs
Dating back to the 1920s when the two entered the league, this is one of the most intense rivalries in all of hockey! Over the course of the rivalry the two have faced off against each other in 23 different playoff series- with five of them being Stanley Cup Finals. The rivalry reached an all-time peak in the 1950 playoffs when Red Wings star Gordie Howe received a life-threatening hit to the head from Toronto’s Ted Kennedy. In the subsequent games and seasons whenever the two met on the ice there were bench clearing brawls. After the league realigned in 1998 the two no longer played within the same division, leading to the likelihood that the two played each other very slim. In 2013 the Red Wings moved back into the Eastern Conference, bringing them back into the same division as the Maple Leafs. With a rivalry as intense as this, you do not want to miss your chance to see these two match up head to head on the ice!
After hosting their home games at Joe Louis Arena from 1979-2017, the Red Wings moved to Little Caesars Arena during the 2017-2018 season. With the exceptional performance by players such as Terry Sawchuk, Vladimir Konstantinov, Chris Chelios, Mike Vernon, and dozens more, The Red Wings have become one of the most popular and successful franchises in the NHL. Fans often refer to Detroit and its surrounding areas as “Hockeytown”. If you are expecting to be in the area during the NHL season, do not miss your opportunity to see the Red Wings in action!
