Franchise History

The Colorado Avalanche play within the Central Division of the Western Conference in the National Hockey League. The Avalanche have won the Stanley Cup twice: first in 1996 against the Florida Panthers, and again in 2001 against the New Jersey Devils. They are the only NHL team that has won all its Stanley Cup Final appearances! Additionally, the Avalanche have won nine division titles, including their first eight in a row in Denver: the longest such streak in NHL history!

The Avalanche were founded in 1972 as the Quebec Nordiques of the World Hockey Association, and then joined the NHL in 1979 following the NHL-WHA merger. Prior to the 1994-1995 season, they were sold to the COMSAT Entertainment Group and relocated to Denver. Early on in Denver, the Avalanche became a team that many feared within the league. Within their first year of being in the league they made it to the playoffs, and eventually won the Stanley Cup. As the years after their first cup victory unfolded, the Avalanche made several key moves to their roster and coaching staff, allowing for them to become even more competitive within the league. In 2000 the Avalanche secured a star player in the likes of Ray Bourque from the Boston Bruins. In his first season with the team they saw defeat in the playoffs. In the 2001 Stanley Cup Finals the Avalanche faced off against the defending champions, the New Jersey Devils. After being down in the series 3-2, the Avalanche came back and won the next two games bringing home their second Stanley Cup. This victory marked the end of Ray Bourque’s Hall of Fame career, and his only time to ever win the Stanley Cup.

For the next several seasons the Avalanche remained competitive in the league bringing home several division titles. After the 2004-2005 NHL lockout the team began a period of suffering, from 2005-2009 the team saw some of their worst seasons since they were relocated to Denver. In 2009 a major overhaul happened, beginning with the management and the coaching staff. During their rebuild the Avalanche acquired some of the top names to play in the league including Matt Duchene (who now plays for the Columbus Blue Jackets), Nathan MacKinnon and Mikko Rantanen. In the 2017-2018 season the Avalanche qualified for the Wild Card, playing against the Nashville Predators in the first round-losing the series 4-2. With a bit more experience under their belt the Avalanche made the playoffs again in the 2018-2019 season, only to be defeated in the second round against the San Jose Sharks. With the team regaining dominance within the league, fans are eager to see what the Avalanche will do on the ice this season!

Colorado Avalanche vs Detroit Red Wings

The rivalry between the Colorado Avalanche and the Detroit Red Wings dates to 1996 when the Avalanche made their first appearance in the Stanley Cup Playoffs. The two faced off in the Western Conference Finals, with the Avalanche defeating the Red Wings as the underdogs of the series. During the series Claude Lemieux of the Avalanche boarded Kris Draper face first into the boards, resulting in Draper needing several facial reconstructive surgeries. Not only did the defeat in the series mark the beginning of the rivalry for the Red Wings, but also the injury to a star Red Wings player. In the following season the two met on the ice once again, with a massive brawl breaking out on the ice. Today known as the “Brawl in Hockeytown”, the game had over 148 penalty minutes and 9 fights registered.
