Franchise History
The Sabres were founded along with the Vancouver Canucks when the NHL expanded to 14 teams in 1970. The city of Buffalo was desperate to get their hands on a professional hockey team within the NHL after hosting an AHL team. The two men who were soliciting a team caught the attention of the NHL after they attempted several times to apply for a franchise. By 1970 the team was created under the name the Buffalo Sabres, to the dismay of many the ownership decided to not name the team the Bison as they felt that the name was overdone in other athletic programs around the city. When the Sabres debuted in Buffalo, they were not the only professional sports team to do so. They were joined by the Buffalo Bills of the NFL, and the Buffalo Braves of the NBA. They are members of the Atlantic Division of the Eastern Conference of the NHL and are based at the KeyBank Center.
Relatively early on the Sabres saw some success on the ice, qualifying for the playoffs for the first time in just their third season. Although they were eliminated in the first round by the Montreal Canadiens, this helped cement the team in the city proving they deserved to be not only in Buffalo but also in the league. The best-known line in the team’s history came out of the 1970’s and they were known as The French Connection. It included Gilbert Perreault, Rick Martin, and Rene Robert. Known for their dynamic and cooperative playing style, the three players have their sweater numbers (11, 7, and 14, respectively) retired and even had a statue erected in their honor at the KeyBank Center.
In 1975 after losing their star player, the Sabres made it to the Stanley Cup Finals, losing to the Philadelphia Flyers. They would not make another Finals appearance until 1999 however, they lost to the Dallas Stars. Since the team made their last finals appearance in 1999, they have had their fair share of ups and downs. However, the team’s loyal fans are diligently awaiting their long-expected comeback. More recently the Sabres have failed to qualify for the playoffs, but with the help of young draft picks such as Jack Eichel, fans are hoping to see the Sabres bring home to Buffalo their first ever Stanley Cup!
Buffalo Sabres vs Toronto Maple Leafs
The rivalry between the Buffalo Sabres and the Toronto Maple Leafs is rooted deeply in the two teams being less than 100 miles apart from each other. Since the realignment of the league in the late 1990s, the two have played within the same division, but surprisingly have only met once in the post season-where the Sabres defeated Toronto in five games. More recently the rivalry between the two has picked up, as the two were fighting to sign the same head coach in 2015. With the stands of matchups between these two teams heavily neutral, attending a game will be an experience that you will never forget!
Buffalo Sabres vs Boston Bruins
Perhaps the oldest rivalry that the Buffalo Sabres have is that with the Boston Bruins. This rivalry dates back to 1970 when the Sabres joined the NHL. Over the course of the rivalry the two have faced off in the playoffs over eight times, with the Bruins taking home victories in five meetings. The most heated point of the rivalry came in 1999 when the Sabres defeated the Bruins on their way to play the Dallas Stars in the 1999 Stanley Cup Final. With this rivalry between these two teams one of the most intense in the league, you do not want to wait to get your tickets!
