History of the Los Angeles Kings
The Los Angeles Kings were founded as an expansion team under the 1967 NHL expansion. The Kings proved themselves early in the game by making the playoffs the first two years of their existence. Then again in the 1970’s and 1980’s they played impressively in the regular season, only to play poorly in the playoffs. Much of their success early can be attributed to their goal tender Rogie Vachon as well as Charlie Simmer, Dave Taylor and marcel Dionne. In 1988, the team made a huge decision that ultimately raised the popularity of the sport in the area, they had acquired Wayne Gretzky from the Edmonton Oilers. Gretzky is often credited for helping bring the team to their first division title in 1991, and their first Stanley Cup appearance in 1993.
Financial problems in 1990’s threatened the teams existence, but they had managed to pull together under their new ownership. In 1995 Phillip Anschutz and Edward Roski purchased the team. After seasons of performing poorly the Kings put together a roster in 2009 that was promising it was comprised of; Jonathan Quick, Drew Doughty, Dustin Brown, Anze Kopitar and Justin Williams. For the next five seasons the Kings made the playoffs, winning the Stanley Cup twice.
The Los Angeles Kings Arena
For the first thirty-two years of their existence, the Kings played at The Forum in Inglewood, California. At the start of the 1999-2000 season they were relocated to the Staple Center in downtown Los Angeles. This extremely famous arena is known for being the home to the Los Angeles Lakers, Los Angeles Clippers and the Los Angeles Sparks. They also host concerts and other events at the arena.
Rivalries
The Kings have two major rivals, both Californian based professional hockey teams. The Anaheim Ducks as well as the San Jose Sharks are known to duel it out on the ice with the Kings, as the Kings eliminated both teams in the 2014 Playoffs.
