About Weezer
Weezer, the alternative pop/indie rock band was formed by your favorite Dungeons and Dragons-loving neighborhood geeks who started a garage band. This nerdy crew has embraced their geeky image. In fact, the name of the band was an idea by Rivers Cuomo, who had been given the nickname "Weezer" in school for having asthma. Formed in February 1992; the original group members were, Cuomo, Pat Wilson, Matt Sharp and Jason Cropper though the band did have other members like Brian Bell, Scott Shriner and Mikey Welsh. Over the years, Weezer has produced some of the 90's and early 2000's biggest alternative jams. Weezer's best hits include "Island in the Sun," "Buddy Holly," "Say It Ain't So," and "Beverly Hills." Their music has a special nerdy brand to it - with a fun sense of humor and awkward undertones, they quickly skyrocketed to stardom. Just so you have a sense of how quirky this band and its followers are: Weezer wrote a song about sweaters - although they'll insist it has nothing to do with sweaters - and in response were sent video treatments regarding sweaters from their fans.
Awards and Accolades
The band has sold over 17 million albums worldwide, including over 9 million in the U.S. alone. Their career boasts groundbreaking music, especially since it has also collected numerous accolades and awards to show for it. In 2009 the group won a Grammy for Best Short Form Music Video for "Pork and Beans." The singles like these were always accompanied with entertainingly quirky music videos, helping turn those songs into chart toppers. Their first album, the "Blue Album" went triple Platinum, launching their extremely successful musical careers. Fans were dying for a cheap ticket to their concert to see these not-so-average Joe performers.
