Montreal Expos
Professional baseball in Washington D.C. dates to the 1870’s but it was not until 2005 that the city would get their first Major League Baseball team. The team that would eventually become the Washington Nationals started out as the Montreal Expos. They were founded in 1969 as part of an MLB expansion project alongside the present-day Milwaukee Brewers, Kansas City Royals and the San Diego Padres. At the time they were the only major league team in Canada. Like most expansion teams in the league, they suffered greatly in their first decade of existence. Under the leadership of star players, the Expos were able to soar in the 1981 season, winning their only division title and then going on to the conference championship only for it to end due to the league wide strike. After years of being in the middle of the pack, the Expos rose once again in the mid 1990’s with the best record for the season in the majors. This accomplishment was quickly diminished when another strike ended the season halfway through. As a result of the strike, the team began to dismantle, and they began selling off their top players. With very few fans remaining, the Expos were rarely playing for a sold-out crowd. By 2001 the league was on the verge of revoking the franchise rights to the Expos, but by some miracle they were able to continue play through the end of the 2004 season.
Reviving Baseball in D.C.
In 2004 the league made the announcement that the Expos would be relocating to Washington D.C. for the start of the 2005 season. The name the Nationals was chosen via vote from the team’s new owners as well as the former D.C. mayor. Early on in franchise history it was well known that to become a successful team amongst all the powerhouses in the league they would need to invest in the draft as well as their farm teams. An investment that proved to pay off in their favor as they were able to land powerhouses Stephen Strasburg and Bryce Harper, both number one draft picks two years in a row. By 2012 the team began making a name for themselves as they won their division title in 2012, 2014, 2016, and 2017. However, they were never able to seal the deal in winning a National League Pennant or a World Series Title. With the young team exceeding expectations and breaking records every season, it will not be long before they win their first title!
Nationals Park
When the team was first granted to the city of Washington they had not yet built a stadium for the team. From 2005 to 2007 the team used the multipurpose RFK Stadium, an arena that hosted baseball, soccer, football and even the Olympic Games. Upon the completion of Nationals Park, the Nationals began playing all their home games there. Fans who sit in the upper deck of the stadium have the pleasure of viewing the nation’s capital, including the Washington Monument as well as the National Cathedral. Food within the ballpark is like no other! Along with basic concession stands, the ball park also offers a full-service restaurant right behind center field. The restaurant serves typical American baseball food including hamburgers and hotdogs, as well gourmet food including salads and other entrees. Another staple of attending a Nationals game at Nationals Park is the submarine dive horn that goes off every time the Nationals hit a home run. As a homage to the nearby Navy Ship Yard, the horn was added before the 2011 season.
Rivalries
The Nationals have only one major rival within their league, and it is with the Baltimore Orioles. Being located so close to each other, it was only natural that the two would face off head to head. They compete in a series every season known as the Beltway Series, with each team hosting a game at their home ball park. Some other notable rivalries that the Nationals have include those with the Philadelphia Phillies, the Atlanta Braves, and the New York Mets, all of who play within the National League East with the Nats.
2019 Nationals Post Season
The Washington Nationals entered the 2019 MLB post season as one of the two National League Wild Card teams. This year marks the first year that the team has been qualified for the playoffs as the Wild Card, and they are looking to bring home their first ever World Series title. After missing the playoffs for the first-time last year in the past three years, the Nationals are hungry to be once again playing baseball throughout the month of October. After a long 7-game series with the Houston Astros, the Nationals took home the title and became world champions in 2019!
