An overnight success after years of labor and love
The band got its start when Deryck Whibley recruited Steve Jocz to play drums in his band, which was then called Kaspir. The duo completed their lineup with Dave Baksh and Jason McCaslin and renamed themselves Sum 41 in 1996. Sum 41 didn't release their first album until 2001, but the debut single drove right to the top of the charts. As their most popular single ever, "Fat Lip" set up high expectations for Sum 41. The band continued to release hit albums, the next few records swinging edgier and harder. Sum 41 toured extensively with bands like Good Charlotte, Blink-182, and the Offspring. In 2012 the band slowed down due to Whibley dealing with health problems from excessive drinking. In 2015 Sum 41 returned full-throttle to their music, releasing a new single in the summer of 2016. The new album also heralded the return of lead guitarist Dave Baksh, his first recording with Sum 41 in nearly a decade.
