Early Franchise History

The Blues were founded in 1967 when the NHL expanded from six to twelve teams and they were named after the famous W.C. Hardy song “Saint Louis Blues”. The St. Louis Blues made it into the playoffs their first three seasons, and in 1980 saw the first year of their 25-season playoff streak. The success that the Blues saw in their early years did not continue into the 1970’s, as they struggled with the reformatting of the league. Throughout the 1970’s the organization as a whole also began to have financial issues which soon became reflected onto the ice, with the inability to pay for star players. In 1988 the Blues acquired star forward Brett Hull as well as Adam Oates, and Brendan Shanahan who collectively helped bring the Blues to playoff contention once again. After numerous years of failure, the Blues began a period of rebuilding where they acquired players such as T.J. Oshie, Erik Johnson, and David Perron. In 2011 the Blues had a turning point when the team was listed for sale, this same year the team saw several instrumental changes in the roster and coaching staff.

First Stanley Cup Victory

Despite being an extremely competitive team for much of their history, the St. Louis Blues were never able to cash in on their playoff runs and bring home the Stanley Cup. Coming off the all-star break in January of 2019 the St. Louis Blues were dead last in the league. In March of 2019 Blues fired their longtime coach Mike Yeo and replaced him with interim coach Craig Berube. Under the new leadership the St. Louis Blues flourished, miraculously qualifying for the playoffs. After several hard-fought rounds, the Blues made it to the Stanley Cup Finals for the first time in franchise history, facing off against the heavily favored Boston Bruins. In seven games the St. Louis Blues defeated the Bruins, securing their first ever Stanley Cup. In doing so they were no longer the oldest team to not have won a Cup title, and they were also the last of the 1967 expansion teams to win the Cup. Effectively proving his position, the Blues hired Berube on a full-time basis for the upcoming seasons.
