History

Pittsburgh got their first professional baseball team in 1876, the Pittsburgh Alleghenys, a non-league affiliated club. In 1877 the team made the decision to join the minor leagues, a decision that would later prove to be detrimental as the league folded after only one season. In 1881 the city of Pittsburgh decided to resurrect the old team as a founding member of the American Association. They would continue playing in this league until their downfall in 1887, which they then switched to being members of the National League. After a controversial acquisition of a player in 1891 the team became known around the league as “pirates”, a nickname which they soon embraced as their team name. Although they were formally known as the Pittsburgh Pirates starting in 1891, it was not until 1912 that this name change was recognized on the team uniforms.

Very early on the Pirates made a name for themselves in the National League. In the first three seasons of the new century they won three National League Pennants and even made an appearance in the first ever World Series in 1903. Six years later after several highs and lows, the Pirates made their second appearance in the World Series against the Detroit Tigers. It took the Pirates seven games, but they were able to secure their first of five World Series titles. Other titles came in 1925, 1960, 1971 and 1979. Perhaps one of the most memorable World Series for the Pirates was in 1960 when they defeated the New York Yankees with a walk off home run, the only time a title has been secured in game seven via a homerun. The Pirates have had ups and downs in recent years, including a drought of 20 consecutive losing seasons, but are hitting their stride again.

PNC Park

Since 2001 PNC Park has served as the home to the Pirates. Previously they played all their home games at the Three Rivers Stadium. PNC Park is the second smallest park in the league with a seating capacity of 38,496, falling just behind Fenway Park as the smallest. The stadium features a natural grass field, a riverside concourse and several food options. Along with the basic concessions stands, the park also features local eateries from around Pittsburgh including; Primanti Brothers, Augustine’s Pizza and Manny’s BBQ. More recently, the park became the first in the league to add the frozen yogurt shop Menchie’s to their list of food options.

Rivalries

The Pirates only have one longstanding rivalry and it is with the Philadelphia Phillies. The rivalry dates to 1887 when the Pirates entered the league that the Phillies were already dominating in. The two have faced off several times in the post season and are often competing to be the best team in the National League. Another major factor within this rivalry is their geographic proximity. Located within the same state it often becomes the battle of Eastern vs. Western Pennsylvania.
