Franchise History

The team was founded during the 1967 NHL expansion, where the league expanded from six teams to twelve. The original Pittsburgh Penguins team consisted mostly of washed up veterans and minor leaguers, as the expansion draft at the time protected the Original Six teams from losing players. Early on the Penguins struggled to get their footing in the league, finishing with losing records at the bottom of the standings. Out of all the losing seasons came top draft picks, which the Penguins capitalized on choosing Michel Briere- who in his rookie season led the Penguins to their first ever playoff berth in 1970. They ultimately got eliminated in the semi-finals by the St. Louis Blues and would not appear in the playoffs again until 1972. Throughout the remainder of the 1970’s and the early 1980’s the Penguins would perform well in the regular season but were never able to capitalize in the post season.

Lemieux Era

After some questionable moves were made on the behalf of the management, the Penguins secured the top overall draft pick in the 1984 draft. On the brink of folding the Penguins drafted Mario Lemieux, the most highly recognized draft pick in the history of the league. Despite demonstrating star power early, Lemieux did not have a supporting line to help his efforts. After five years on the team the Penguins finally made the playoffs, only to get eliminated in the second round by the Philadelphia Flyers. In the 1990 draft the Penguins aimed to build up a strong core of players to play alongside Lemieux, they drafted Jaromir Jagr fifth overall. Now with a powerhouse team on the ice the Penguins were able to bring home their first Stanley Cup in 1991 when they defeated the Minnesota North Stars. The following year the Penguins defeated the Chicago Blackhawks, bringing home their second Stanley Cup in back to back years. Throughout much of the 1990’s and early 2000’s the Penguins remained competitive around the league. In 1997 Lemieux announced his retirement from the league and was immediately inducted into the Hall of Fame. Years later in 2000 Lemieux shocked the hockey world by not only purchasing the Penguins, but also announcing that he would be coming back to the league to play for the Penguins.

Crosby Era

The early 2000’s were a period of dismay for the Penguins, but out of it they acquired several top pick choices in the likes of Marc- Andre Fleury, Evgeni Malkin, and most notably Sidney Crosby. Now with a team stacked in comparison to the rest of the league, the Penguins were once again at the top of the league. In 2009 they won their third Stanley Cup against the Detroit Red Wings. From 2009-2015 the Penguins underwent a slight rebuild where they acquired even more star players in Phil Kessel, Nick Bonino, and Matt Cullen. By the start of the 2015-2016 season the Penguins were a force to be reckoned with, bringing home back to back Stanley Cups in 2016 and 2017. With most of the Cup winning team lost in trades and to free agency, the Penguins are looking to become the dominant team that they once were!

In addition to eight division titles, they have won the Stanley Cup five times- in 1991, 1992, 2009, 2016, and 2017. Along with the Edmonton Oilers, the Penguins are tied for the most Cup championships among non-Original Six teams. Today the Penguins are one of the most notable teams in the league, and often draw sell out crowds to home games at the PPG Paints Arena!

Must See Matchups

Being one of the top teams in the league for much of their existence, it is only natural that the Penguins have garner their fair share of rivalries along the way. Among the teams that they regularly face off with include the New York Islanders, as well as the Columbus Blue Jackets. But perhaps some of the best Penguins games to see in live action are against their top two rivals, the Philadelphia Flyers and the Washington Capitals.

Pittsburgh Penguins vs Philadelphia Flyers

The Penguins-Flyers rivalry, also known as the Battle of Pennsylvania, is one of the most intense rivalries in the NHL. The rivalry began in 1967 when the teams were introduced to the NHL’s “Next Six” expansion wave. The rivalry is so intense due to the divisional alignment and geographic location, as both teams play in the commonwealth of Pennsylvania. The Penguins and the Flyers have met in the Stanley Cup playoffs four times since 2008, which has heated the competition even more in recent years.

Pittsburgh Penguins vs Washington Capitals

The Penguins-Capitals rivalry stems from the 11-playoff series that the two teams have met in, which is the second most between NHL expansion teams behind the Dallas Stars and the St. Louis Blues. Pittsburgh has emerged victorious in every series except for the 1994 Eastern Conference Quarterfinals and the 2018 Eastern Conference Second Round. Additionally, the two teams are only a 250-mile drive from their respective home cities, allowing visiting fans of both teams to attend each other’s games in large quantities. The rivalry is also fueled by the emergence of Sidney Crosby (Pittsburgh) and Alexander Ovechkin (Washington) as two of the NHL’s biggest superstars.
