About Newsies - The Musical
Newsies: The Musical, a Broadway musical that follows the true story of the 1899 Newsboys Strike in New York, was inspired by the 1992 movie Newsies and features the original songs from the film as well as some new classics. Broadway luminary Alan Menken wrote the music with Harvey Fierstein on the book. The show first appeared on Broadway back in 2012 and is now a favorite amongst lovers of musical theater. Newsies follows a crew of young Newsboys who are desperately poor and desperate to rise up out of their homelessness but are held down by the oppressive newspaper business that employs them. The main character Jack, a role first played by a young Christian Bale in the film, longs to move away from New York City to his dream home in Santa Fe, but finds himself being drawn constantly back toward his unescapable situation working as a newsboy. The musical features an eclectic cast of hardscrabble characters, from Jack's disabled friend Crutchie to the villainous newspaper publisher Joseph Pulitzer, and a rousing stable of songs including the inspiring "Sieze the Day" and the high-stepping "Kin got New York".
