Miracle Mets
Founded in 1962, the Mets replaced the city's National League teams, the Brooklyn Dodgers and the New York Giants, when they departed. To this day, the team's colors are representative of this replacement, taking the Dodgers' blue and the Giants' orange. Throughout franchise history the team has appeared in five World Series, winning two of them in 1969 and 1986. While this may seem small compared to the likes of the New York Yankees, it is the most appearances and wins achieved by an expansion team in the league’s history. Up until 1969 the team had only seen some modest success, never appearing in the post season. In 1969 with the help of Hall of Famer Tom Seaver the team beat out the Atlanta Braves for the National League pennant, and then went on to surprise the baseball world when they beat out the Baltimore Orioles to win their first World Series title. For the next eight seasons the Mets would put up decent records, making the post season several times but never able to lock down another win. In 1977 they traded their star player Seaver, which proved to be detrimental to the team. For several years after the trade the Mets placed last in the league. In the mid 1980’s after a few strategic draft choices they were back on the top, and in 1986 they won their second World Series title. In the years since their second World Series win there have been several highs and lows for the Mets. They have added a few more division titles and pennants but have never been able to secure another World Series title. With it being over 32 years since their last win, the Mets are eager to take the field and bring home their third ring.
Citi Field
From 1962 to 1964 the Mets played all their home games at the Polo Grounds in Upper Manhattan. In 1964 they moved and began play at the historic Shea Stadium, where they remained playing until the end of the 2008 season. Beginning in the 2009 season the Mets began playing all of their home games at Citi Field, adjacent to where Shea Stadium once stood. Included in the stadium are party decks, porches, and home run apples that rise and light up whenever the Mets score a homerun. Fans can also gather and play video games and wiffleball in the FanFest area that is located behind the center field scoreboard. Along with their several options of concessions within the food court, Citi Field also is the home to several clubs and restaurants on every level of the ballpark. Like most ballparks, they also have a Hall of Fame& Museum where they commemorate players and staff both past and present.
Rivalries
Playing in the same city as the Yankees, it is only natural that the two have a rivalry. Although they play within two different leagues, the inception of interleague play has allowed for the two to play a total of four games against each other in a season. What became known as the Subway Series, each team hosts two games with the other at their home ballpark. The teams have also faced off in the post season a total of four times, and in the World Series in 2000, with the Yankees taking home the win. Considered to be one of the hottest rivalries in the National League, the Mets-Phillies rivalry has resulted in several brawls throughout the 1980s. Continuously competing against each other for playoff positions has only intensified the rivalry. Attending a game where the Mets play the Yankees, or the Phillies is sure to be an entertaining event!
